How did I design these caverns? As luck should have it, my parents needed me to pull out a stump this summer. Knowing that this scene was coming up, I took a lot of pictures for reference. And look, there are actually holes in the ground where the roots used to be. That's a real thing. Unless those pits are some kind of termite tunnels - I'm not an arborist.
