I really like how the background characters are turning out in these outpost scenes. When I was very young, I used to think that you could determine the quality of a cartoon by the amount of effort the artists put into the background characters. If the extras were scribbled and lacked detail then the cartoon was cheap and uninspired. But if the extras were almost as well designed as the primary characters then the artists had spared neither expense nor effort. That cartoon was made with love. Now that I'm older, I use more sophisticated criteria to judge the quality of a cartoon, but I think those old standards still influence me. I don't feel like the page is finished unless every character looks polished.

The background characters definitely can add more live to the world.
