This year’s theme: LUNAR TREES! I’ll explain a bit more about The Lunar Tree Zodiac later on, so keep reading, or just scroll down to learn more.
If you’re joining in, share your Birch Tree Moon art on December 12th, 13th, or 14th.
My Art Challenge
For my own personal full moon art, I have chosen cut paper as my medium. For each work, I’m going to design an image in three layers on my computer, then cut out each layer on my Cricut cutter. I will then glue the cut layers together into a single work of art. Each of my pieces will depict the full moon, the featured Lunar Tree, and the tree’s specific leaf shape.
Other participants are welcome to chose any medium they like, or they can change mediums from moon to moon.
The Birch Tree and New Beginings
The tree that is featured during January’s moon is the Birch tree, which symbolizes beginnings and ambition.

About Lunar Trees
The Lunar Tree Zodiac is based on an old Celtic tradition. Honoring different trees throughout the year shows both reverence for nature and acknowledgement of the lessons the trees have to teach us. Each tree in the Lunar Tree Zodiac has a virtue that we can reflect on, which is derived from the way that tree lives and grows. Many trees have more than one meaning, mostly likely because the original meaning may have been interpreted differently or expanded on over the years.
There are actually 13 Lunar Trees, but not every tree will have a correlating full moon this year, so we will just be focusing on the 12 that have their time of acknowledgement during a full moon. (I will let you know when the tree with no moon is having it’s moment – it’s not part of the art challenge, but some of you might want a full set of trees in your collections.)
More to Come in February
February’s tree is the Rowan Tree, which symbolizes protection. Post your Rowan tree art on February 11th, 12th, or 13th.
