February’s Full Moon rises tomorrow, so it’s time for another installment of The Full Moon Art Challenge, now beginning its second month of its second year.
Each month, artists make of work of art, using that month’s moon name as a prompt. Then, they post the work on the day of, the day before, or the day after the full moon.
Storm Moon Rises
February’s old Celtic Moon name is “The Storm Moon.” My personal medium for the year is animation, so here’s an animated GIF, representing the Storm Moon:
Since this is a February moon, “Storm” probably refers to “Snow Storms,” but who can resist throwing in a little rain and lightning? Yes, I took a little artistic license on this one.
And, in case the GIF isn’t showing up, here’s the static version:
SHOUT OUTS!
This month, I have a couple of shout outs to make.
First of all, the first day of February’s Full Moon Art Challenge is also my sister Liz’s birthday! Fans of this challenge might remember Liz as the musician who wrote the soundtrack to my moon art retrospective, the video that compiled all my art from last year’s challenge. Liz is taking the full moon art challenge too. Look for her art on Twitter (@Beepsicle) and Mastodon (Be*******@ma******.social“>@Be*******@ma******.social). Her chosen medium is collage, namely photos and digital drawings.
Second, I want to give a shout out to “The Smudge Thistle Full Moon Art Challenge” on Instagram. Smudge Thistle is a artist who – by complete coincidence – came up with the same idea to do a “make a piece for each full moon” challenge too. Their challenge is using North American moon names (The same prompts I did last year). Now, some participants are now doing both challenges at once, or incorporating both moon names as prompts for a single piece, which is very cool and exciting. If you’re on Instagram, check the tag #stfullmoonchallenge to see some of the pieces. And, if you’re a fan of things both airy and earthy, consider giving Smudge a follow too.
New Moon Merch
Finally, since so many of you loved my moon calendars, I’ve added moon phase stickers to my Etsy shop.
Now, you can turn any surface into a moon calendar. Finally!
Until Next Time…
Next month’s moon, The Wind Moon, rises on March 7th. Be ready to share your Wind Moon art on March 6th, 7th, or 8th. I’ll be looking for you.
