It’s 24 Hour Comic Day 2024! This year, I’m doing a comic adaptation of the classic folktale, the Story of Chanticleer.
If you are reading this on October 5th, 2024, watch the space below. I’ll be adding panels to this blog post all day as I finish them. If you are reading this after October 5th, hopefully I’ve finished the book and you can read it all in one throw.
(Edit: I did not finish in 24 hours, so this became a 48-Hour comic. Yes, it is completed, but I plan to clean it up a bit more before I make a print copy.)
If you want to know all the places where I will be sharing the comic in-progress or if you want to know what set of rules I will be following, please check out the previous blog post.
About the Story
Chanticleer was a medieval folktale character, whose stories were popular in France and England. Perhaps the most famous Chanticleer story, “Chanticleer and the Fox,” was even retold by Geoffrey Chaucer in his famous Canterbury Tales.
In 1910, French Playwright Edmond Rostand wrote a four act Play about Chanticleer. The story explored Chanticleer’s connection to the sun. (It also included a good bit of contemporary social commentary that won’t be explored in this comic version.) The play was adapted into a novel by Florence Yates Hann in 1913.
More recently, in 2012, author Templeton Moss combined the two most famous Chanticleer tales; “Chanticleer and the Fox,” and “Chanticleer and the Sun” into a single coherent story. He has generously allowed me to borrow from this story structure to craft my own version. You can find a nice catalogue Templeton’s works Here
And Now, The Comic…
48-Hour comic. Started: October 5th, 6:45. Completed October 6th, 9:30.
