This month’s round of the Full Moon Art Challenge runs July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, with the actual full moon rising on July 3rd.
The Mead Moon
The Celtic Name for July’s Full Moon is the Mead Moon. Here’s my animation for this moon:
Here’s the static version:
In some parts of Europe, this name is given to the July moon, while others give it to June’s moon. So, if you ever thought you heard this name given to the previous month’s moon, you weren’t wrong, you were just looking at another region.
Since mead drinks are made from honey, this moon is also called the “Honey Moon” – a term you’ve probably heard given to the days after a new wedding. What’s the connection between mead, honey, and weddings? Most weddings are performed in June and July, when honey – and therefore mead – are in season. No, it has nothing to do with wedding toasts or getting blitzed before the ceremony or at the reception (I checked).
See you in August
Next month will be a very special month. August will see a full moon on the first day of the month (The Lynx Moon) and there will be a second full moon on the 30th – a rare Blue Moon. I hope you’ll join us then.
